![]() While Relink was expected to be shown, another announcement caught nearly everyone off guard: Granblue Fantasy Versus. It could take a short while longer, but the results could be worth it. Granblue Fantasy: Relink is due for release on PlayStation 4 at some point in the future, but could also hit PC when it’s localized - Cygames fully intends to release this title worldwide. It’s easy to see why this game is taking longer than expected. The environments seem open for exploration, but the game will also have action-packed set pieces, all while looking very pretty. In comparing the showcases from last year and this year, it’s evident how much more polish it’s received over time. The game’s flow resembles a combination of the styles from NieR: Automata (also from PlatinumGames) and the Dragon Quest Heroes games. The demo provided examples of large and small enemies, and the obstacles the player will encounter. The playable party consists of several characters from the mobile game, including Gran (essentially the player avatar, with a female option available), Katalina (the knight), Lyria (the token mysterious girl), Vyrn (the mascot), and several other familiar faces, many of which have also been featured in previous videos and screenshots. Last year’s gameplay showcase was lengthy at being six minutes and 39 seconds, but this year’s was even longer, enough to show off a fair portion of the game’s third chapter. At least the game surfacing at this year’s Fes showed how it’s fortunately not in development hell. It was planned for a 2018 release then, but the timeframe was changed to “TBA” when it was shown at last year’s Granblue Fantasy Fes. ![]() ![]() The game was originally announced in August 2016, at a conference where Cygames announced their first non-mobile initiatives. It’s an action RPG spinoff of the mobile title being developed by PlatinumGames that’s taking a little longer to release than expected. Granblue Fantasy: Relink has actually been around for a while, though it’s dropped the “Project” and changed the “Re:Link” aspects for the final title. The two projects were shown at the Granblue Fantasy Fes 2018, because this game is big enough to have its own annual event in Japan. But it’s fine, since most of the not-crazy gaming types are happy to be incorrect here.Ĭygames is working on several projects, but they’re taking the easy-though-fun route by making two of them spinoffs of the franchise that put them on the map. For a while, several gamers didn’t think there was a chance that a company would use profits from mobile games to fund big boy console titles, but Cygames set out to prove those skeptics wrong. ![]() So, they decided to use it to fund game development for dedicated gaming platforms. The company was so awash with cash as a result that they didn’t know how to spend it. The team of developers who hailed from several other companies established this outfit and created mobile game Granblue Fantasy, which became a big phenomenon in Asian territories. I’ll never get tired of the story about how Cygames came to be involved with “traditional” video game development. ![]()
